Dr. Guang-Shing Cheng

Bio: Dr. Guang-Shing Cheng is a pulmonologist who focuses on improving outcomes for cancer patients who have respiratory failure and lung complications related to their cancer treatments. She is developing new ways to prevent lung damage and improve lung function in these patients. Dr. Cheng’s main interest is bronchiolitis obliterans syndrome, a serious complication of blood stem cell transplantation. She also studies the role of respiratory viruses and other infectious pathogens in lung disease in patients with compromised immune systems.

Bio: Yeheun earned her B.S. degree in Biochemistry with a minor in Bioethics & Humanities from the University of Washington. Her journey started in laboratory research at Seattle Children's, followed by her role as a medical scribe in dermatology then ophthalmology. She joined Fred Hutch in 2023 as a research coordinator on Dr. Cheng's team and is dedicated to advancing healthcare and research in meaningful ways. Outside of work, she loves to explore different cities and discover new restaurants.

Bio: Cheryl earned her B.S. degree in Biochemistry with a minor in Nutritional Science from the University of Washington. She first started in healthcare as a medical scribe in Gastroenterology and Cardiology, and then worked as a medical assistant-phlebotomist in Sports Medicine. Passionate about research, she moved to Seattle Children’s where she worked as a research coordinator in the Emergency Department then Hematology/Oncology. She joined Fred Hutch in 2024 as a research coordinator on Dr. Cheng's team. Outside of work, she loves to snowboard, hike, and spend time with her family and friends, especially her beloved 2 cats and puppy.

Fun Fact: Cheryl can speak 5 languages!

Chad (Qianchuan) He, Ph.D.

Bio: Dr. Chad “Qianchuan” He is a biostatistician whose research is focused on the development of new statistical methods for the analysis of genomic data related to cancer and other complex diseases. His research is highly interdisciplinary in that it involves artificial intelligence, statistical theory, bioinformatics, and biomedical sciences. Dr. He and his colleagues have developed a statistical approach known as SOMAT to detect somatic mutations associated with multiple cancer-related traits. These mutations, which happen spontaneously or are brought on by environmental exposures, are the driving force for tumor development. Dr. He's biostatistical analysis has been used for studies of breast and liver cancers, tumor microenvironment in sarcoma, as well as risk factors in colon cancer.

Maggie K. Guerriero, MSN, RN, ARNP

Bio: Maggie Guerriero is an Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner who specializes in treating pulmonary complications — problems affecting the respiratory tract — that are related to cancer diagnosis and treatment. Her background includes working in thoracic oncology and caring for patients with cancers affecting the head and neck. In addition to providing hands-on care, she also active in research, studying the effect of stem cell transplantation on patients’ lung function. She is also a Teaching Associate within the Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine at University of Washington School of Medicine.

Bio: Kelsey attended Saint Martin’s University and the University of Pittsburgh earning a B.A. in Mathematics and an M.S. in Biostatistics. She was born and raised in Spokane but has a new found love for western Washington and Seattle living. When she is not providing statistical support for Phase II clinical trials at the Hutch, you can find her exploring the diverse opportunities found in the Pacific Northwest such as hiking and enjoying a cone at Molly Moon’s.

Fun Fact: Kelsey loves seeing live music at different venues around the city.

Bio: Tara graduated with a degree in Business Administration from Wright State University and has 20 years of experience in operations, research, and clinical trial administration. She joined Dr. Lee’s team in 2013 and provides fiscal management and oversight of the adult Bone Marrow Transplant program. On weekends, she can be found skiing the slopes of Snoqualmie Pass.

Fun Fact: Tara's favorite book of all time is a toss-up between "Cryptonomicon" by Neal Stephenson and "Geek Love" by Katherine Dunn.

Bio: Emily graduated from the University of Washington and worked in the Hospitality Industry for 15 years.   After being inspired by the care she personally received on her own cancer journey in 2006, she started her career at Fred Hutch and joined Dr. Lee’s team in 2023 providing fiscal management over her clinical trials.  In addition to her work at the Hutch, Emily is also a Patient Advocate for the National Comprehensive Cancer Network.  In her free time, Emily enjoys spending time with her family and friends, walking her Dalmatian along Alki Beach or researching new recipes to make.

Fun Fact: Emily has been to Disneyland over 50 times!

Bio: Rachael graduated from Western Washington University with a B.A. in Communication Sciences, and Disorders and minor in Behavioral Psychology. She has always been inspired to support others and started her career as a Certified Nursing Assistant at Harborview Medical Center in Trauma Surgery prior to graduation. She moved from patient care to administrative support at HMC in Stroke Admin, then UWSOM fundraising, before coming to FHCC.
