Biography

Dr. Larry Corey is past president and director of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, co-PI of the HIV Vaccine Trials Network and professor in the Departments of Medicine and Laboratory Medicine at the University of Washington. His main areas of expertise are human virology and immunology, especially herpesviruses, HIV infections and infections in the immunocompromised host, infectious disease related cancers, and global health. Corey pioneered the development of antiviral therapy for human chronic viral infections and was the first to demonstrate that short- and long-term daily therapy for herpes infections with medications directed at inhibiting viral-specific enzymes were safe and efficacious; studies that led to the successful development of therapy for HIV, HBV and HCV infections. He also demonstrated that antivirals could reduce transmission to sexual partners, conceived the use of antivirals to prevent mother-infant transmission of HIV, and developed combination antiviral therapy for HIV treatment, leading to the prevention of infection and improved survival of millions of infants and adults. He has been continuously funded for his work in viral immunity since 1978.

He is a member of the Institute of Medicine and the Board of Scientific Counselors-Basic Sciences of the National Cancer Institute, a fellow of the Infectious Diseases Society of America, and a member of the American Epidemiological Society and the Association of American Physicians. He is the recipient of the Pan American Society Clinical Virology Award, the American Society for STD Research Parran Award, the University of Michigan Medical School Distinguished Alumnus Award and the Infectious Diseases Society of America Ender’s Award. He was elected Member, American Academy of Arts and Sciences in April 2012 and the recipient of the 2012 Cubist-ICAAC Award, American Society for Microbiology. He also sits on the scientific advisory boards of Immune Design and Vir Biotechnology.

Corey received his MD from the University of Michigan and his infectious diseases training at the University of Washington. He loves both sports and his 6 grandkids.
