Linda Ko, PhD

Linda Ko, PhD

Title: Principal Investigator


Dr. Ko is the director of HCRC. Dr. Ko is also the co-director of community engagement at the UW Institute of Translational Health Sciences. She is a behavioral scientist with expertise in the development, testing, and evaluation of health communication strategies. Her work draws from the discipline of communication, marketing, social epidemiology, and social and behavioral sciences. Her research aims to understand community’s behavior within the socio-cultural context, develop interventions that will address those behaviors and translate knowledge through community-based participatory research. Her work has been funded from private and public agencies including the National Institutes of Health. Dr. Ko received a PhD degree from the University of North Carolina Gillings School of Global Public Health and is currently an Associate Member at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, and an Associate Professor at the University of Washington Department of Health Services. In addition to English, Dr. Ko is a native speaker of both Spanish and Korean.

Joshua Gold, PhD

Joshua Gold, PhD

Title: Postdoctoral Fellow


Dr. Joshua Gold is a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Health Services at the University of Washington and Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. He received a PhD in health psychology and an MPH in community and behavioral health from the University of Iowa. Broadly, Joshua’s research is focused on exploring psychosocial determinants of cancer-risk behaviors with emphasis on weight-related behaviors and outcomes. More specifically, Joshua has conducted studies examining how cancer risk behaviors are affected by weight-based stigmatization, personality traits, and comparative risk assessments. Through his postdoctoral training, Joshua plans to expand on these lines of research and improve cancer prevention efforts within community-based settings, particularly for underserved and minority populations. 

Sonia Bishop, BS

Sonia Bishop, BS

Title: Project Manager


Ms. Bishop received her Bachelors of Science in Community Health Education from Central Washington University and has over 20 years of experience in cancer prevention research, coordinating research projects in Seattle, Lower Yakima Valley of Washington and the Navajo Nation.  Ms. Bishop has experience working with over 40 different worksites in the Seattle area, leading Employee Advisory Boards (EABs) and Community Advisory Boards (CABs) for community-based participatory research projects. Currently, she is the Project Manager for the Health Communications Research Center in the Division of Public Health Sciences in the Cancer Prevention Program at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center.

Sarah Sutton, MPH

Sarah Sutton, MPH

Title: Project Coordinator

 

Prior to moving to Seattle, Sarah Sutton earned her Bachelor of Science in Public Health from Oregon State University and worked as a patient navigator in urologic oncology.  She received her MPH in Health Services from the University of Washington, where she worked as both a graduate research and teaching assistant. During her MPH program, she developed a strong interest in qualitative research and continues to strengthen those skills today. Her research interests include health promotion and capacity building. Sarah believes in the power of stories in bringing about systemic change and hopes to further integrate it in her public health practice.

KeliAnne Hara-Hubbard

KeliAnne Hara-Hubbard

Title: Graduate Student Intern


KeliAnne Hara-Hubbard is a graduate student intern at the Fred Hutch Cancer Research Center. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering at the University of Washington and spent five years in the healthcare industry prior to returning to UW for her Master’s in Public Health (social behavioral sciences). Her research interests include addressing health inequities through health promotion and communication, with a special passion for working with Asian Americans and older adults.

Luis Serrano-Rubio is an intern at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and a current undergraduate student in Biology at the University of Washington. Luis has clinical experience from working in the military as a Hospital Corpsman as well as a specialized Laboratory Technician over the past five years. During his time in the military, Luis earned his Associate of Science in Health Science Laboratory Technology from George Washington University and worked in a multi-service unit to provide quality blood and blood products to overseas contingencies and nearby hospitals. His current aspiration is to attend medical school with an MPH in Health Services, and ultimately practice in predominantly Latino Communities. 

Zuzeth Jimenez

Zuzeth Jimenez

Title: Undergraduate Student Intern


Zuzeth Jimenez is a second-year undergraduate majoring in Psychology and minoring in Biology at Heritage University in Toppenish, Washington. Zuzeth is a McNair Student Scholar and a participant of the Summer Health Professions Education Program offered by the University of Washington in summer of 2020. After completing her undergraduate studies, Zuzeth hopes to apply to dental school. Zuzeth is passionate about healthcare systems, specifically the disparities of healthcare needs for low income communities and families, with a focus on agricultural workers.
