Professor, Vaccine and Infectious Disease
Jenny received her bachelor’s degree in Biology from Macalester College in St Paul, Minnesota, where she worked with immunologist Dr. Jan Serie and first fell in love with immunology. She then earned her PhD from Yale University, where she worked with Dr. Akiko Iwasaki on identifying how different types of virus infections are sensed by plasmacytoid dendritic cells. After completing a postdoctoral fellowship with Dr. Sasha Rudensky, Jenny started her lab at the Fred Hutch in 2009. Outside of the lab, Jenny loves to explore new places and travel, read, and spend time with family.
Irene and her family emigrated to the Seattle area from Spain. She earned a B.A. in Medical Anthropology and B.S. in Microbiology from the University of Washington in 2018, then spent some time working on T cell malaria vaccine antigen discovery and development in Dr. Sean Murphy's laboratory at UW SLU. She is currently a Ph.D. candidate in the Pathobiology Ph.D. program and focused on the role of regulatory T cells in shaping memory and tissue-resident T cell responses during HSV-2 infection. Outside of the lab, she enjoys hiking, kayaking, travel, live music, good food, and snuggling her kittens Lou and Winona.
Jess graduated from Carnegie Mellon University with bachelor’s degrees in chemical and biomedical engineering, and earned her PhD in chemical and biological engineering from the University of Iowa. She has worked on a variety of projects during her time in the Lund lab, including investigating the role of regulatory T cells in the immune response to West Nile virus and Zika infections, and utilizing the Collaborative Cross mouse model to identify genes involved in the immune response to WNV and SARS-CoV. Currently, she works on projects studying the role of progesterone in barrier immunity, T-cell activation and exhaustion in the HIV-positive female genital tract, immunogenetic determinants of HSV-2 infection and disease, and the evaluation of immune responses elicited by novel herpesvirus vaccines.
Outside of the lab, Jess can be found trail running in the mountains, paddle boarding, or cross-country skiing, preferably doing all of those things with plenty of snacks and her schnauzer adventure buddy.
Finn graduated from the University of Washington with a Bachelor of Science in Medical Laboratory Science. After graduation, he worked with the University of Washington International Clinical Research Center on HIV and other clinical research projects in Mombasa, Kenya. Then, he joined Lund Lab to investigate the underlying immunological correlates for HIV susceptibility in samples provided by a cohort of African females. Finn is interested in attending medical school and continuing with global health research as a physician-scientist. Outside of work, Finn enjoys hiking and is an avid Washington Husky fan.
Jessica graduated from the University of Washington with a bachelors in biochemistry. She has worked in Jenny’s lab ever since on a variety of projects from WNV to HSV. Outside of work she enjoys attempting to grow vegetables she may or may not eat while wrangling a cat who uses her cuteness to get away with mayhem.
Sarah earned her PhD in Microbiology and Immunology from the University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill in 2019 studying how regulatory T cell (Treg) immune suppression can limit breast cancer immunotherapy effectiveness. As a postdoctoral fellow in the Lund lab, Sarah studies the role of Tregs in modulating NK cells in mucosal tissue during HSV-2 infection. Outside the lab, she enjoys spending time with loved ones, reading, and traveling.
Lakshmi received her bachelor's of science degree in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from UC Davis in 2019 . She then worked for two years at UC San Francisco as a research technician before entering the Pathobiology PhD Program at UW in 2021. Since officially joining the Lund Lab in the spring of 2022, she studies the mechanisms by which cytokines can modulate regulatory T cell function during viral infection. Outside of the lab, Lakshmi enjoys crocheting, reading, and running.
Elizabeth graduated from University of Washington with a bachelors in Biochemistry and over 8 years of experience in research. She supports Boonyaratanakornkit Lab, Lund Lab, and Prlic Lab here at Fred Hutch. Outside of work, she enjoys hiking, reading, being on the water, and socializing with friends and family.
Isabel graduated with a B.S. in neuroscience from Washington State University in 2024. During her time as an undergraduate student, she worked in a research lab for two years studying intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells. During which she helped to characterize two novel mouse lines for the lab. Isabel has always had a large interest in immunology and is excited to have the opportunity to learn more about the field in the Lund Lab and work on various projects here. Outside of the lab she enjoys reading, drawing, gaming, hiking, and listening to music.
