Supporting Latinas with Breast Cancer Achieve Weight Loss

The purpose of this research is to understand the most effective ways to help Latinas with a history of breast cancer achieve weight loss through healthy eating and physical activity.

Diet & Lifestyle Strategies

  • This study tests different ways of delivering a diet and lifestyle weight loss intervention to Latina breast cancer survivors.
  • The program lasts 12 months, with participation lasting up to 15 months.
  • In Phase 1, participants will be assigned to one of two groups:
    • ¡Vida! Program: Online sessions will teach how to achieve and maintain healthy weight loss through diet and physical activity.
    • ¡Vida! Program Plus: ¡Vida! program plus online cooking and physical activity sessions.
  • In Phase 2, participants who meet their weight goals will continue in their group. Participants who did not meet their weight loss goals will receive additional support, which could include:
    • Health Coaching: One-on-one online sessions with a health coach who will guide and support healthy weight loss.
    • ¡Vida! Toolkits: Boxes by mail that will include kitchen tools, exercise gear, and non-perishable food.
  • Participants will receive gift cards for participation for a total of up to $550.
  • All participants will receive a Fitbit watch, Fitbit Aria Air scale, and cooking utensils.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Female
  • 18 years or older Hispanic/Latina
  • Diagnosis of stage I-III breast cancer in the last 5 years
  • No evidence of current, recurrent or metastatic disease
  • 60 days post treatment (active use of anti-estrogen therapy allowed)
  • Access to the internet
  • Willing and able to complete all study activities
  • Not pregnant, lactating, or planning to become pregnant during the study period
