Jackson Orem

Jackson Orem, MBChB, MMed, PhD, is a medical oncologist and honorary lecturer of Makerere University and Executive Director of the Uganda Cancer Institute. The UCI is a teaching and research institute of the Government of Uganda under the Ministry of Health. Orem spearheaded the creation of the East Africa’s Centre of Excellence in Oncology at the UCI with a mandate to provide specialized cancer care research and training for the entire East Africa region under the East African Community (EAC) network of Centers of Excellence. He also leads the development of several international collaborations with renowned international cancer centers and institutions for infrastructure, human resource capacity development; institutions include: Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, University of Washington, Case Western Reserve University, National Cancer Center of Korea and most recently, the University of Cambridge. Orem is a Principal investigator on several NIH-supported research projects and recipient of industry-supported grants, etc. GSK-funded Noncommunicable Disease Open Lab, MERCK, and ROCHE. Orem has strong international collaboration with civil society organizations such as American Cancer Society and is the alternate chair for African Cancer Coalition. In collaboration with IAEA, Orem is the national lead to develop radiotherapy services.
