Elgene graduated from the University of Washington in 2020 with backgrounds chemistry and biology. He worked with Dr. Jeff Rasmussen as an undergraduate researcher to develop tools to study somatosensory neuron development in zebrafish. In addition, he was also part of the institute for protein design and worked with Dr. Liangcai Gu’s lab to develop and characterize an optogenetically controllable protein dimerization system. Lastly, as a former member of UW iGEM team, a synthetic biology team lead by undergraduate students from different disciplines where he worked closely with a computational team to assist in developing a chemically induced protein dimerization system.

His broad experiences in lab surrounded by both experimental and computational biologist has inspired him to pursue a career at the intersection of data, technology, engineering and biology. Currently, he has joined the lab as a joint intern with Dr. Manu Setty’s group for the summer and is eager to apply his computational and programming skills to help analyze single cell RNA sequencing data.

When he is not in lab or staring at his computer screen all day reading, he likes to hang out with his friends either virtually through videogames or outdoors hiking and going on milk tea runs and on rarer occasions practice the violin.
